MAMUN

Model United Nations is program that has been around for over fifty years in colleges and high schools around the world.  The premise is this:  Students assume the roles of ambassadors to the United Nations and are provided with an agenda comprised of items also being debated by the real United Nations in New York.  Students, acting as delegates, research the issues from the agenda and study their assigned nation's point-of-view in order to accurately represent the country.

Upon arriving at a Model United Nations conference, delegates will meet in committee sessions to debate the issues from the agenda, draft resolutions, and ultimately arrive at the best solution the committee can devise.  During a conference, delegates are challenged to persuade, influence, compromise, and ultimately make peace with friends and strangers while working within a structured process of debate.

Code of Conduct

1.     Delegates shall conduct themselves in a professional manner during all meetings and will abide by all rules of procedure of the Mid-American Model United Nations.

2.     Delegates may not be in possession or under the influence of illegal narcotics, drugs, or alcohol during the duration of MAMUN.  Firearms and other weapons and facsimiles of the same are also prohibited.  Any violation of this policy will result in immediate dismissal from the conference.

3.     Delegates shall dress in an appropriate manner during all meetings of MAMUN.  Sunglasses, cell phones, personal stereos, shorts, and any other inappropriate garb or accessories are prohibited.  If Delegates chose to appear in national dress, it must be an authentic representation of the nation in question and may not be a derogatory or inappropriate caricature.

4.     Delegates will be respectful to staff, advisors, delegates, hotel staff and wait staff.  Treat the hotel well; don’t do to it what Lady Gaga did to fashion.  Remember that the wait staff makes their living on tips. A fifteen to twenty percent tip should be the norm at all restaurants in the area.

5.     Smoking is prohibited in all of the rooms holding MAMUN sessions.

6.     Delegates may not use the placard or credentials belonging to another Delegate.  Violation of this policy will result in immediate ejection from the body in which the Delegate is participating.

7.     Delegates shall respect hotel property at all times.  If we break, scratch, or move anything, the hotel staff will remember it for centuries to come.  Please keep our reputation in mind when using hotel furniture and facilities.

8.     No Cell Phones, while we understand that you miss home and that not all your friends are at our conference, there is plenty to talk about here.  Leave the cell phones behind. Ringing noises are bad for debate, and are discourteous.

9.     Laptops are ok, but games are not.  Go ahead and bring your fancy electronic device in order to write and research, but make sure it doesn’t become a distraction to you or the other delegates.  Laptop covers are to be closed while committees are in session.

10.  Resolutions should be the original work of the delegate submitting them.   This means it is not permissible to copy resolutions or parts of resolutions that were either submitted to previous MAMUN sessions or other model UN’s or  which were written and submitted to the real United Nations. We’ll know.  We read a lot of resolutions.

11.   Delegates must show up and be on time.  Events posted in this handbook are not optional unless indicated.  Being late to committee or social events is disrespectful to other delegates and your advisor.

12.   Delegates will wear their credentials at all times.  Unless they are in the pool, because that will rust the little pins on the back.  Failure to wear credentials will cause delegates to be excluded from debate and be denied entry to social events.

13.   Delegates will travel safely.  When leaving the hotel please travel in groups.  No delegate should ever leave the hotel alone.  We recommend taking your credentials off when leaving the hotel, but only when leaving the hotel.
